So now you have your aquaponics setup and are ready to go. All you have to do now is to know how to care for the fish you have chosen in your system. That is almost the easy part, feed them and let the mother do nature’s thing. You have to keep an eye on them every day as they grow.

Give it a few days to see if the pH goes back to where it should be. Fish are not so picky about their water unless it gets too high on the pH scale. Keep it under 7.0.

When I say ‘legal considerations’, it is not just a doom and a gloom, but some governments have imposed restrictions on what kind of fish you can grow in a tank. It is best to consult with your local pet store, university or the Ministry of Agriculture. They will be able to give you a clear answer about exactly which aquaponics fish species you can grow and which you cannot.

Fingerlings are just that as long as your finger and fry are fish that has just hatched. You should not keep fingerlings and fry together. The larger fish will eat the fry!! It is better to go with fingerlings as fry takes a lot of time to grow. You can also use mature fish in the aquaponics system if you don’t want to eat them and just grow vegetables

Some are OK, while others are very good, but they are expensive. If you try to raise your fish for your own use, the food costs may not be as important. But if you are looking to raise your fish for sale on the market, then we must look at other ways to feed your fish.

Duckweed. If you have ever started fishing in a small pond in the late summer months, will you have noticed that this little green plant makes fishing almost impossible? Well, that’s duckweed. Duckweed likes sunlight and very slow moving water. You can grow your own in your backyard. Simply use a container with water and add the duckweed. Nature takes care of the rest.

Note: Mosquitos love stagnant water, so you have to buy some Mosquito Fish. These are small tropical fish that you encounter both locally and on the internet. These little fellows thrive on eating mosquito larvae and will keep your garden free from mosquitos.
